Religion and Hypnosis

Will my religious organization have a problem with hypnosis?

Chaplain Paul Durbin,  has created a thoughtful, in-depth article about religion and hypnosis, including articles from clergy of several different faiths.

Excluding the Christian Science, Seventh-Day-Adventist, Jehovah Whitnesses, and Scientology, most other religions support the use of hypnosis for therapy. This includes Protestant and Orthodox Churches, Catholic, Jewish, Buddhism, Hinduism, Shintoism, Yoga, Muslim, and many other faiths.  I think it would be wise to be careful of any organization that wants to repress any naturaly occurring human element.

A few facts worth noting:

  • Scientologists believe to become a Clear, you need to clear your subconscious mind, and move all thought processes into the conscious mind. Although this group seems to progress well in the self-help department, It seems strange that they think they can consciously operate in subconscious levels. For example: breathing, the beat of your heart, 5(5) = 25, offering a handshake, and a myriad of other unconscious matters would not be possible without the use of the subconscious mind.
  • The Christian Science Church was founded on hypnosis techniques. The Church's founder, Mary Baker Eddy was a client and student of hypnotist Phineas Quimby. After hypnosis helped her overcome illness, she then integrated what she had learned with her Christian faith. Later, after accusations in the New York Times that she had plagiarized Quimby, Mary Baker Eddy separated her church from hypnosis.  Mary Baker Eddy then began a smear campaign against hypnosis, to keep her followers ignorant from these techniques, that were being used for her own personal gain.
  • The Roman Catholic Church approved hypnosis by decree in 1847. Pope Pius approved hypnosis for childbirth in 1956.
