Smoking a cigarette exposes you to 4000 chemicals, 200 of them are deadly, and 60 of them cause cancer. Some chemicals are added by the ciggerete companies, while others are from the cigarette smoke. Tobacco companies are not required to tell you what ingredients they put in cigarettes, or why. The top three ingredients are the most harmful.

Nicotine: A drug more addictive than alcohol or heroin. Also an active ingredient in insect sprays.

Tar: Collects inside the lungs forming a sticky mass, which damages lung tissue.

Carbon Monoxide: A poison found in car exaust; destroys red blood cells causing death.

Cyanide: The deadly ingredient in rat poison. Causes internal hemorrhaging.

Formaldehyde: The foul-smelling liquid used to preserve the dead, also used in makeing carpets.

Ammonia: A poisonous gas and powerful cleaning agent used to clean toilets. Helps the body absorb nicotine.

Arsnic: A potent poison used to kill rodents.

Butane: A flammable chemical in lighter fluid. Used in ciggarette paper to make it burn longer.

Acetone: A poisonous solvent and paint stripper commonly found in nail polishes.

Toluene: A poisonous industrial solvent banned in nail polishes.

Pyridene: Used as a chemical dog repellent spray.

Hydrogen Cyanide: Used in gas chambers for executions.

Benzene: The poisonous toxin found in moth balls; banned in paint thinners.

Methoprene: A chemical in cigarette smoke which is also used in flea spray.

Vinyl Chloride: Chimical usedin the manufacture of PVC pipe.

Xylene: A product of tobacco smoke. A carcinogenic found in permanent markers and pens.

Propylene Glycol: Adds moisture to tobacco and improves nicotine delivery to the brain.

Stearic Acid: Used to make candle wax.

Turpentine: A highly toxic chemical. When inhaled it causes seizures.

Hexamine: Found in charcoal lighter fluid.

Lead: Poison that stunts growth, causes brain damage, banned in paints and gasoline.

Cadmium: Highly toxic chemical used in car batteries and metal plating; known to cause cancers.

Silicon: A substance used in adhesives; now banned in breast implants.
